All good things must come to an end, and unfortunately that’s the case for the 2016 heated season. But wait a second, the pool is still open in November and December?!!! It sure is, all you hardy swimmers out there that enjoy swimming outdoors during the winter, the pool will be open in November every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday heated to 20°C and in December every Saturday and Sunday unheated, all the way to our now traditional New Years Day Swim.
There was a few sessions that were new in 2016, for the first time in the 80 years history of the pool, the pool was once again extended through till the end of October, as mentioned above the pool was heated to 20°C during November (limited opening) where if they are brave enough members could extend their Season Tickets for an extra month, and lastly our Master Swim session which run every Monday evening and a Thursday evening (during High Season), we would like to say a big thank you to Henry and Mick for all their effort and giving up their time to make the session a huge success.
Overall what a fantastic heated season we have had, so lets take a look back at the highlights of the 80th Season.
The season kicked off on 20th March with our traditional opening day party, hundreds of local residents flocked to the pool to purchase that all important season ticket and enjoy their first swim of the 2016 season. Over our opening weekend, we participated in The Sainsbury`s Sports Relief Swimathon, over 120 people registered to take part in 4 sessions over the weekend with participants swimming an incredible 380km combined raising well over £8000 for charity.
On Friday 15th April we had the first of our 7 monthly night swim to live music. What amazing fundraising events they have all been. Across the season over 1000 people have attended enjoying refreshments and a wide range of music from Acoustic sets, indie rock, folk, jazz, brass band and choirs. You name it we have had them up on the band stand playing to a sold out crowd.
So as the halfway point in our season rapidly approached on Saturday 18th June we arrived at our 4th Annual 24 hour Mid Summer opening. With the staff arriving bleary eyed at 3:00 am to open up at 3.30am Saturday morning and staying open till 3.30am Sunday morning. Over 650 people swam during the 24 hour period with some completing sponsored miles, and with no few than 8 team completing our 24 miles in 24 hour challenge and every one else swimming as many lengths as they could to help us reach our goal of swimming from Hathersage to Stonehenge as quick as possible, which we achieved at 11:30 pm Saturday evening, so we decided to continue on an see how far we could get and incredibly we made it all the way Lands End. Great fun was had by all through the day enjoying a lovely sunset coming over the hill to live music in the evening. We raised over £2000 for the King Georges Field Charity which helps with the upkeep of the pool.
As the end of the season drew nearer and for the 4th year running in September we held a MacMillan Coffee morning raising £547.82 for Cancer support. This year we were lucky enough to have the heated season extended by an extra month through October and we ended on such a high with the sunshine and over 400 people attending the end of season party and Halloween Scarefest.
We would like to thank all our customers and volunteers for supporting the pool and if you’re not braving the unheated sessions we look forward to welcoming you back for the 2016 heated season on Saturday 19th March.
