Another season has come to a close and what a successful season it has been!!
The season started off with a bang with the Sports Relief Swimathon on 21st – 23rd March. Over the course of the weekend we ran 3 sessions, attracting 100+ swimmers to take part and raise money for Sports Relief. Swimmers of all ages took part competing over various distances, some working in teams and others taking on the challenge all on their own. In total over £11,000 was raised through the event, which made us the 9th highest in country, which is a fantastic achievement by all.
Throughout the season we have run many different fundraising events that help ensure the continued future of the pool. The most popular have been our Night Swims to live music which have run on the 3rd Friday of each month. Each of the night swims has been a complete sell out, with swimmers enjoying music from Rock to a classical harpist. Whatever the music everyone had an amazing evening, swimming in the evening and enjoying refreshments on the veranda.
Our biggest event of the year was the 24 hour Summer Solstice Swim. We opened the doors at 3:30am Saturday 21st June and remained open until 3:30am Sunday 22nd June. There were a few different challenges going on throughout the day, we had 4 teams trying to swim a mile every hour for 24 hours with all teams being successful, one person even managed it on her own!! Also we challenged every one that swam, to help us swim from Hathersage to Stonehenge. To reach that target we needed to swim 11648 lengths. All swimmers took part in the challenge and contributed to our goal, whether they swam 100+ lengths or a child swimming their first. We reached Stonehenge by 1:20am Sunday and continued on for a further 11 miles, swimming an amazing 12231 lengths in total.
For the last couple of years we have participated in the Macmillan Coffee morning, which as you may all be aware helps raise money for Macmillan cancer support. This year with everyone’s generosity we raised £402.66, which is a fantastic amount for such a worthy cause.
As the season drew to a close we decided to finish the season off with a party, so on Sunday 28th September we did just that, from 10 – 2 we had a public session with music from a local choir Barlow Singers and from 2 – 5 season ticket holders and patrons were allowed in free of charge to enjoy music from local band Three Blind Mice and Chanel Yates a young singer songwriter. Over 250 season ticket holders turned up to enjoy a beautiful afternoon’s music whilst having their last swim of the season.
Don`t forget you can continue to enjoy the pool every Saturday and Sunday through October and every Saturday through November from 11 – 3 for unheated water swimming, full details are available on our website. So why not come done and take a dip in the pool as the water temp takes a plunge.
Lastly all the staff and volunteers would like to say a big “thank you” to everyone for their continued support of our wonderful facility and for helping make the 2014 season our best yet!! We look forward to seeing you all in 2015.
