Hathersage Pool’s Eclipse Swim: A Night of Wonder, Community & Eclipse Magic
Last night, Hathersage Pool became the stage for one of the most memorable evenings we’ve hosted — our Eclipse Swim, where swimmers gathered to experience a rare celestial event from the comfort of our beautifully heated water.
With the moon slowly crossing the face of the sun, the sky dimming into twilight, the atmosphere was nothing short of breathtaking.
From the moment doors opened, swimmers arrived buzzing — families filled with excitement, regulars ready for their evening dip, and visitors who had travelled miles especially for the event.
As the eclipse began, the light shifted into a soft, surreal glow. The hills around Hathersage darkened gently, creating a perfect setting for a once‑in‑a‑lifetime swim.
The water, kept at a welcoming 27°C many swimmers floated quietly, watching the sky transform above them.
Some swimmers chose peaceful laps, taking in the changing light with each length. Others gathered at the shallow end, chatting softly as the moon reached its peak alignment. A few simply floated on their backs, letting the moment wash over them.

The atmosphere didn’t just capture the attention of our swimmers — it drew in the media too. ITV Calendar and BBC Look North joined us to film the event, while BBC Radio Sheffield covered the story for their listeners. We even welcomed a national press photographer on poolside, capturing the eclipse as it unfolded over the water. It was lovely to see such interest in a small village pool doing something a bit different, and it added an extra buzz to an already special evening.

We saw families making memories, friends enjoying a unique night out, and regular swimmers experiencing their familiar pool in a completely new way.
Our staff team worked brilliantly throughout, ensuring the evening ran smoothly and safely while still soaking up the atmosphere themselves.
